SUPPORT SHAWAN DOWNS
Shawan Downs, located in Northern Baltimore County, is a premier equestrian center, featuring a state of the art steeplechase course. The Land Preservation Trust established Shawan Downs on 300 acres of former farmland in Cockeysville, Maryland as a way of preserving the landscape's agricultural legacy while building a new tradition of hosting equestrian events to benefit local charities.
Nineteen area residents, designated "Original Sponsors," supplied a total of $2.5 million to purchase the property.
In addition, over 150 people, designated "Life Founding Members," have donated at least $10,000 to support this project.

Ways of Giving
In considering a gift to Shawan Downs, donors should be aware of the various ways to give. Each of these vehicles can provide considerable tax benefits.
Pledges: Any gift may be pledged in quarterly or yearly installments.
Matching Gifts: Many companies match employees' contributions to nonprofit organizations. Donors must initiate the process to increase their gift through participation by their employer.
Gifts of Appreciated Securities: Donors of long-term appreciated securities enjoy a two-fold tax benefit: the charitable deduction for income tax purposes is 100 percent of the current fair-market value (rather than the cost value), and there is no capital gains tax on appreciation. For those who give securities - stocks, bonds, shares of mutual funds - the federal tax deduction is limited to 30 percent of their adjusted gross income in the year in which the gift was made. However, these donors may carry forward the excess amount as a charitable contribution for up to five years, subject to the 30 percent rule. Interested investors should discuss these options with a financial adviser.
Life Founding Member sponsorships are still available. For their invaluable contribution, Life Founding Members will have their names included in all programs and literature related to events at Shawan Downs, as well as parking at all events.
